چکیده
MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on board TERRA weekly composite mean products of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a, and modeled ocean net primary productivity with a spatial resolution of 4.63 km and altimeter derived sea surface height (SSH) data are used to study the changes in the primary productivity (PP) induced by the November-December 2000 tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. A maximum SST drop of 2C, a sea surface depression of 10 cm compared to the periphery, increase in chlorophyll-a by 1.5 mg/m and enhanced average mixed PP of 964 gC/m/y were observed around 11.0N and 81.0E after the passage of the cyclonic storm. The enhanced PP after the passage of the cyclone supports the base of the pelagic marine food web, directly affecting the fishery productivity.

Impact of cyclones on the Bay of Bengal chlorophyll variability using remote sensing satellites
Impact of three different cyclones on the Bay of Bengal water and its surface chlorophyll concentration has been studied in three different zones during October-December 2000 using 24 scenes of IRS-P4 Ocean Color Monitor (OCM). The chlorophyll concentration found to be increasing up to 5.0 mg/m with effect of cyclones and hurricanes. The data has been correlated with Sea Surface Temperature (SS...
متن کاملMonthly variability of chlorophyll and associated physical parameters in the southwest Bay of Bengal water using remote sensing data
In the present paper, we have carried out analysis of surface chlorophyll-a concentration in the seas around India obtained using the Indian Remote Sensing satellite IRS-P4 Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) data. The focus was given to southwest Bay of Bengal where such studies are scanty. The study portraits the chlorophyll-a pattern during July 1999-June 2000. The monthly sea surface temperature (SS...

[1] We present the evolution of oceanographic conditions off the western coast of South America between 1996 and 1999, including the cold periods of 1996 and 1998–1999 and the 1997–1998 El Niño, using satellite observations of sea level, winds, sea surface temperature (SST), and chlorophyll concentration. Following a period of cold SST and low sea levels in 1996, both were anomalously high betw...
متن کاملAn Intrathermocline Eddy and a tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal
The Bay of Bengal, subjected to monsoonal forcing and tropical cyclones, displays a complex field of ocean eddies. On 5 December 2013 a sub-surface vortex or Intrathermocline Eddy (ITE) composed of water characteristic of the Andaman Sea was observed within the thermocline of the western Bay of Bengal. We propose that the ITE was the product of Tropical Cyclone Lehar interaction on 27 November ...
متن کاملA CYCLONE INDUCED STORM SURGE FORECASTING MODEL FOR THE COAST OF BANGLADESH WITH APPLICATION TO THE CYCLONE `SIDR'
The coast of Bangladesh has a specialty in terms of high bending and many off- shore islands. Incorporation of the coastline and island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme is essential for accurate estimation of water levels due to surge. For that purpose a numerical scheme consisting of very fine mesh is required along the coastal belt, whereas this is unnecessary away from the coast. In...
